I am interested in obtaining a zero interest for 36 months no rhen a low rate thereafter. Once college is completed (36 months) we will be better able to repay the loan, ergo, the desire to go zero interest the length of time. Is there a card that would accommodate out needs?

By: CompareCards | May 31, 2016

Hi Stan,

There is no credit card that offers 0% APR for 36 months. The longest intro APR on the market is 21 months on the Citi Simplicity and the Citi Diamond Preferred cards.

By: Vicki Allen | Jun 10, 2016

When the 0% was a couple of months from expiring, you could get a card with a 0% Transfer Fee (provided that exists then) to transfer it and still pay no interest. Remember that you have to make the minimum payments monthly.

2 Year ago I filed for bankruptcy within 1 year I had it all paid off because I got a reverse mortgage and had the money to do it. I only have a bank debit card now.. Would like to get a visa credit card but my credit says Im only fair.. When do you think I would be able to get a credit card again.. Do I have to wait another 11 years??

By: CompareCards | May 25, 2016

Hi Linda,

You should definitely not have to wait another 11 years before you are able to get approved for a credit card. There are many credit cards for fair credit on the market, but with a bankruptcy in your recent history, you may have to start with a secured credit card instead. Secured cards work just like normal credit cards, but you have to put down a refundable security deposit to get approved. The Capital One Secured MasterCard and the Discover it Secured Credit Card are both great options.

Which would be a card for my son to get? He is fresh out of college.

By: CompareCards | May 24, 2016

Hi Joe,

If your son doesn't have any credit, he will probably have to start with a secured credit card. The Capital One Secured MasterCard and the Discover it Secured Credit Card are both great options. Secured cards require a refundable security deposit to get approved, but after a year or so of responsible use, he should be able to get approved for a standard, unsecured credit card.

By: David Beauvais | Jul 10, 2016

If your son is responsible, you can help him out by making him an authorized user on one of your cards. That will report to his credit with your history. Don't do this if you have lates on your card.

I am starting a new business and want to get a low interest card for business expenses. Would prefer no fees and cash back rewards. which card would you recommend?

By: CompareCards | May 19, 2016

Hi Kathy,

The Chase Ink Cash for Business is an excellent business credit card that offers low interest and a generous cash back rewards program. With this card, you'll earn 5% cash back on purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services. You will also receive 2% back at gas stations and restaurants, and 1% on everything else. There is 0% APR for 12 months on purchases and no annual fee.

I already have several of the cards on the list. Just as I received the cards I went through some very hard times. the wife and I had some emergencies that has pushed us to almost max out these cards. I would like to combine these cards to a 0 interest card to clear this new debt of $15,000+ to one payment a month and clear it all permanently.

By: CompareCards | May 25, 2016

A line of credit of $15,000 is pretty high, so it will be difficult for you to get approved for one card to transfer all of your balances to unless your credit is very excellent. That said, the Chase Slate card is an excellent option for balance transfers as it comes with 0% intro APR for 15 months and no fee for transfers made within the first 60 days.

My payments for Capital One was Zero interest till April 2016, I payed off the credit card and I believe i will start to accumulate interest, My balance is 350.00 with a minimum payment of 25.00 as of May 2016. Can i pay transfer the payment and received the offer with no stipulations and have a low monthly bill?

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

Hi Patricia,

You may be able to transfer your balance to a low interest credit card depending on you credit. If you have a good credit score, the Chase Slate card would be a great option as it comes with 0% APR for 15 months, no annual fee, and no fee for balance transfers made within the first 60 days.

I owe approx $60K on credit cards - always paid on time and above the minimum. I would like to get a new card for a balance transfer. If I get hit with 20% interest, it will be a problem. If I can get a card to transfer a balance - there's no problem. The debt was built while I was out of work - now I have a business generating enough income to pay $1,200 - $1,500 month....

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

Hi Robert,

The balance transfer credit cards that you're able to get approved for will depend on your credit score. A total credit card balance of $60,000 is very high, so you will not be able to transfer all of your balances onto on card at one time. If you have excellent credit, the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard would be a great option for you because it comes with no balance transfer fee and a very low interest rate of 8.25%. If you are approved for this card, you could transfer the maximum amount you are allowed to the lower interest rate, pay it off as quickly as you can, and repeat until you have paid off your debt in full.

By: | May 14, 2016

This is probably a silly question, but when they say 0% APR for 18 months does this mean that my entire payment each month will go to the principal. Meaning, say I transfer $7,000 from my Citibank Card to the Bank of America Card because I want to get out of debt faster and never use the Bank of America card to purchase anything; will my monthly payments all go to the principal because of the 0% APR ?? I hope that makes sense.

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

Hi Janine,

You are exactly right! Balance transfer credit card like the BankAmericard Credit Card are a great way to pay off your debt quickly because every penny of your payments during the introductory period will go towards the principle of your balance. If you wanted to have your balance completely paid off by the end of the intro period with the BankAmericard Credit Card, you would need to make monthly payments of $389 for the first 18 months.

I would like to get a credit card that gives me the maximum miles-per-dollar spent . . . I had heard of a card that gave double miles for every dollar spent, as well as a 50,000 mile signing bonus. BUT, I also heard that some cards require many more "points" than others, when booking a flight . . . can you help me?

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

HI Paul,

The Capital One Venture Card may be the card you're referring too. It has a generous rewards rate and a great sign up bonus. If you're looking for a 50,000 point sign up bonus, check out the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

It's true that every airline frequent flyer program is different and flights cost different amounts of miles depending on the airlines. But cards like the Capital One Venture and Chase Sapphire Preferred aren't associated with one particular airline, so you can redeem the points and miles for any flight.

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.
